Sodalite is composed of sodium aluminium silicate. It is translucent to opaque and coloured a bright royal blue with white or grey streaks. Sodalite is named after its sodium content.

Sodalite may also be grey, yellow, green, or pinky-blue, and is often mottled with white veins or patches. Although massive sodalite samples are opaque, crystals are usually transparent to translucent. Sodalite is the main member of the sodalite group along with Hackmanite, Hauyne, Nosean, Lazurite and Tugtupite.
